Go BACKDistrict Pulwama  broadly  comprises  of  two  zones   viz mountainous  and  plains.  Some areas of Pulwama, Tral, and  Pampore Blocks fall  in  the  mountainous zones and rest of the  area  comes under plain  Zone.  The culture of hilly zone is PAHADI where people generally  live nomadic life style.  The people from these areas are  strong and  hard  working.  They make their livelihood  from  cattle grazing.   These  people speak pahadi and their men are  found  with beard generally wearing ragged clothes. The rest of region is having KASHMIRI  culture  which is culturally integral part of the  Kashmir division.   The  overall  population of the  District  comprises  of Muslims,  Hindus  and  Sikhs  in  the  ratio of  95.88%  : 2.5%  :   1.5 %  approximately  respectively.   The sikhs community dominates in  the Tral Block  of  the  District.   The  sikhs  are  generally  Punjabi speaking and their men are always found beared and with turbans over their heads.   The  Hindu  population has almost migrated  from  the District.

 

        However  KASHMIRI is the local language in general Urdu  and English are  also  spoken  in the District.All  important  religions fairs like  Id-ul-fitre,  Holi, Baisakhi, Ramnavmi, Eid- ul-zuha  are celebrated  by  all  people  with   zeal  and  fervor.   Above  all, independence  day  and  Republic  Day  are  celebrated  with  ferdal enthusiasm.

 

        The  district  is  enriched  with fruit  and  saffron.   The district  has  the  most  beautiful apple orchards  in  the  valley.Besides the  people  are  also engaged  in  Handicraft  Development, Shawal manufacture.   The local crafts men have mastered in creating eye catching embroidered Namda, Gabba and other artistic items.
